CBS Slants Bush Poll in Favor of Democrats | NewsBusters.org |

I have many "left" friends. Friends whom I respect and whose opinion I value. One thing I often point out to my friends on the left who are fine, upstanding and caring individuals, is that they are often being lied to by their fellows. It angers me when the "right" lies to me, and I know many of my fellow conservatives take action just as I do. But when are those on the left going to get fed up with being lied to?

THE IRRATIONALITY OF IT ALL |
Monday, February 27, 2006 |
As the ban nears, the "religious fanatics" will evoke any argument to advance their faith. Here is a quote from one of their clerics:
CNN.com - South Dakota nears abortion ban - Feb 24, 2006: "Opponents of the bill argued that abortion should at least be allowed in cases involving rape, incest and a threat to a woman's health.
If a woman who is raped becomes pregnant, the rapist would have the same rights to the child as the mother, said Krista Heeren-Graber, executive director of the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault.
'The idea the rapist could be in the child's life ... makes the woman very, very fearful. Sometimes they need to have choice,' Heeren-Graber said."
Let the Snipet finish the sentence:
"The idea the rapist could be in the child's life makes a woman very, very fearful--so lets kill that child" |

EVERY GOOD FASCIST SOUNDS REASONABLE ON THE SURFACE |

"Suppose you were meeting today to decide who got the vouchers. First parent who comes says, "I want to send my daughter to St. Peter's Roman Catholic school," and you say, "Great, wonderful school, here's your voucher." Next parent who comes says, "I want to send, you know, my child to the Jewish day school." "Great, here's your voucher." Next parent who comes says, "I want to send my child to the private school that I've always dreamed of sending my child to." "Fine, here's your voucher." Next parent who comes says, "I want to send my child to the school of the church of the white supremacist." You say, "Wait a minute, you can't send -- we're not giving you a voucher for that." And the parent says, "Well, the way I read Genesis, Cain was marked, therefore I believe in white supremacy, and therefore, you gave it to a Catholic parent, you gave it to a Jewish parent, you gave it to a secular private school parent. Under the Constitution, you can't discriminate against me." So as the next parent comes and says, "I want to send my child to the school of the jihad." "Wait a minute, we're not going to send a child with taxpayer dollars to school of the jihad." "Well, you gave it to the Catholics, you gave it to the Jews, you gave it to the private secular people, you going to tell me I can't? I'm a taxpayer, under the Constitution." Now, tell me how we're going to make those choices?"

UNHOLY ALLIANCES |

Reading many LEFT websites and blogs I am impressed with the connect-the-dots research many of them do. Things like: Cheney was once CEO of a company that produced dog biscuits for Clinton's dog, Buddy, who once left droppings on the lawn of Lay's lawn who was indicted for contracting with the Chinese to launder money for the Emirates who are in partnership with Bush...
I'll bet anyone ONE MILLION PESOS that this story won't be reported on a LEFT website or blog (except to prove me wrong or to paint it in a positive light):
Labor Solidarity Partnership Agreement Between the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations and the National Education Association
PREAMBLE
The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations ("AFL-CIO") and the National Education Association ("NEA"), affirming the importance of a unified voice on behalf of America's working families, our members, and the public that we serve, enter into this Agreement establishing the AFL-CIO/NEA Labor Solidarity Partnership ("Partnership").
I. PURPOSE OF PARTNERSHIP
The AFL-CIO and the NEA recognize that it is in their mutual best interest for the NEA and its affiliates to participate in the broader labor movement through joint efforts with the AFL-CIO and its affiliates at the national, state, and local levels. The purpose of the Partnership is to encourage and facilitate such participation by affording NEA affiliates the opportunity to become members of AFL-CIO local central labor councils ("CLCs") and AFL-CIO state federations. In affording this opportunity, the Partnership has been crafted to reflect the fact that the national NEA does not now, and will not by virtue of the Partnership, have any affiliation relationship with the AFL-CIO.
II. AFFILIATION OF NEA LOCAL AFFILIATES WITH THE AFL-CIO AND MEMBERSHIP OF NEA LOCAL AFFILIATES IN AFL-CIO LOCAL CENTRAL LABOR COUNCILS AND STATE FEDERATIONS
A. Procedure to Become a Directly Affiliated NEA Local of the AFL-CIO
1. An NEA local affiliate that desires to become a member of a CLC will notify the NEA and the AFL-CIO. The Implementation Committee provided for in Section IV of this Agreement will develop rules and procedures for providing such notice.
2. The AFL-CIO and the NEA will consult with each other through the Implementation Committee concerning each request for membership, and each organization will consult with their affiliated organizations through their own internal processes.
3. If after the foregoing consultations both the AFL-CIO and the NEA approve the request, the AFL-CIO will issue a Certificate of Affiliation to the NEA local affiliate designating it as a Directly Affiliated NEA Local of the AFL-CIO ("DANL"), eligible to be a member of the relevant CLC. The AFL-CIO and the NEA also will address in their consultation the nature of the relationship between the DANL and the relevant AFL-CIO state federation, and whether a percentage of the per capita taxes that the DANL pays to the AFL-CIO should be rebated to the DANL in light of the unique relationship between the AFL-CIO and the NEA. The agreements reached on these and any other issues will be subject to approval by the DANL and the relevant NEA state affiliate, and will be reflected in the Certificate of Affiliation issued by the AFL-CIO to the DANL.
B. Rights and Obligations of a DANL
1. Except as otherwise provided in Section 2 below, a DANL will in all respects, including representation and voting in the AFL-CIO and coverage under Articles XX and XXI of the AFL-CIO Constitution, have the same rights and obligations in the national AFL-CIO as any Directly Affiliated Local Union of the AFL-CIO.
2. The AFL-CIO waives any oversight powers that it may have under the AFL-CIO Constitution or otherwise with regard to DANLs, including the power to trustee or merge DANLs. The AFL-CIO's oversight powers will be limited to revoking a DANL's Certificate of Affiliation for its failure to meet its obligations under this Agreement, including non-payment of per-capita taxes, or failure to comply with decisions rendered under Article XX or XXI of the AFL-CIO Constitution. Except as to any financial obligations that a DANL may have under this Agreement, the AFL-CIO waives any rights that it may have under the AFL-CIO Constitution or otherwise to any claim on the assets of a DANL.
3. As a member of a CLC, a DANL will have the same rights and obligations as other AFL-CIO local affiliates which are members of the CLC, including rights and obligations with regard to payment of per capita taxes to the CLC and participation in the governance and affairs of the CLC. As with other AFL-CIO local affiliates which are members of CLCs, DANLs are not bound by the CLC's political endorsements, nor are they required to participate in the CLC's member mobilization program in support of the endorsed candidates. A DANL may not participate in a CLC's political program in support of an endorsed candidate absent the approval of the relevant NEA state affiliate.
4. As a member of an AFL-CIO state federation, a DANL will have such rights and obligations as have been agreed to by the AFL-CIO and the NEA, and set forth in the Certificate of Affiliation issued to the DANL by the AFL-CIO. As with other AFL-CIO local affiliates which are members of state federations, DANLs are not bound by the state federation's political endorsements, nor are they required to participate in the state federation's member mobilization program in support of the endorsed candidates. A DANL may not participate in a state federation's political program in support of an endorsed candidate absent the approval of the relevant NEA state afiiliate.
5. DANLs will transmit their AFL-CIO per-capita taxes to the NEA, which will in turn transmit them to the AFL-CIO. The AFL-CIO will transmit any rebates that may be due to DANLs to the NEA, which will in turn transmit them to the DANLs. These transmissions will be in a manner agreed upon by the Implementation Committee.
6. Whether a DANL meets the requirements of federal, state and local law will be the responsibility of the DANL, and the AFL-CIO will have no responsibility in this regard.
7. A DANL may terminate its affiliation with the AFL-CIO and its membership in a CLC and an AFL-CIO state federation on sixty (60) days written notice to the NEA, the AFL-CIO, the CLC, and the AFL-CIO state federation. A DANL will have no obligation to pay per capita taxes to the AFL-CIO, the CLC, or the AFL-CIO state federation subsequent to the effective date of termination, but will remain liable for any and all financial obligations to the AFL-CIO, the CLC, and the AFL-CIO state federation incurred prior to that date.
III. MEMBERSHIP OF NEA STATE AFFILIATES IN AFL-CIO STATE FEDERATIONS
The AFL-CIO and the NEA will consult with each other through the Implementation Committee concerning requests from NEA state affiliates that desire to become members of AFL-CIO state federations. In this consultation, the Implementation Committee will develop procedures and mechanisms for NEA state affiliates to become members of state federations, including the conditions under which such membership will be allowed.
IV. IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE
Not later than ten (10) days after the effective date of this Agreement, an Implementation Committee, consisting of three members appointed by the AFL-CIO and three members appointed by the NEA, will be established to oversee and facilitate implementation of this Agreement.
V. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Except as provided for in this Agreement, or by reason of affiliation wit the American Federation of Teachers, no NEA local or state affiliate will become an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, or a member of a CLC or an AFL-CIO state federation.
B. The AFL-CIO and the NEA will publicize this Agreement among their affiliates. The NEA will advise its affiliates to consider whether to take advantage of the opportunity afforded them by this Agreement, and will provide information and technical assistance to its local and state affiliates that desire to do so.
VI. DURATION
This Agreement will become effective when it is approved by the appropriate governing bodies of the AFL-CIO and the NEA. It will terminate on December 31, 2009, unless:
A. extended by mutual agreement of the parties; or
B. terminated prior to December 31, 2009, by either party on sixty (60) days written notice to the other. |

LITTLE RED HEN |
Monday, February 20, 2006 |
There is a new children's book that is all the rage in Democratic circles. "Why Mommy is a Democrat" is written by a lifelong Democrat and political activist, Zeremy Zilber.
While some children's stories, The "Little Red Hen" being my favorite, have powerful messages about values, including political values, "Why Mommy is a Democrat" is blatantly political and partisan.
Some people will condemn Zilber for using a children's book to indoctrinate helpless young minds. I congratulate him. I've thought of doing this myself, but have never gotten around to it. My book would be a lot different of course, but it would be just a blatant about my worldview.
On one page of his book, Zilber writes, "Democrats make sure we all share our toys, just like Mommy does." Boy, do they ever! Democrats would have made the Little Red Hen share her bread with the dog, the cat and the goose, even though they passed up plenty of opportunities to help her make the bread.
Parents should teach their children the values they cherish. Children's books are a good way to do it. Republicans and Libertarians can find plenty to criticize in "Why Mommy is a Democrat," and they should. They should also get busy and write some children's books of their own. |

Denmark, which first published the cartoons, temporarily closed its embassy and advised its citizens to leave Pakistan.
Prayer leader Mohammed Yousaf Qureshi announced the bounty for killing a cartoonist to about 1,000 people outside the historic Mohabat Khan mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar.
He said the mosque and the Jamia Ashrafia religious school he leads would give a $25,000 reward and a car for killing the cartoonist who drew the prophet caricatures _ considered blasphemous by Muslims. He said a local jewelers' association would also give $1 million, but no representative of the association was available to confirm the offer. " |

Bush Fails To Prevent East Coast Blizzard |

Hat tip: Danny
Minorities Hit Hardest
by Brian Williams
NBC 02/12/06
As President Bush and his staff cowered in the White House, the snow continued to pile up on the many poor and African American victims who could not afford to get out of town or to safety in Florida.
Crucial supplies of blankets, hot cocoa, popcorn and dark rum, so essential to surviving the stress of any major snowstorm, lay in stores undelivered.
"Where is the government? I need my sidewalk shoveled so I can get out to buy my danged lottery tickets!" said one D.C. resident from his living room. "Why are we wasting money in Iraq when we could be spending it here on me?"
Progressive blogs blasted the President for his inaction. "We find the timing terribly suspicious, just as the Domestic Spying hearings kick into high gear, what happens? A major northeast Blizzard. Why now?" wrote one blogger.
Hearings into the Blizzards' effect on hearings are almost a certainty.
Howard Dean has suggested he will call for an investigation once his new medications kick in and John Kerry took a break from the sporting activities of the glamorous super-rich in some exotic locale (random choice: Ice Sailing in Finland) to call for new legislation outlawing snowstorms.
"The Republican Congress has dropped the ball once again. I have always been a staunch supporter of anti-snow legislation, except for certain l! occasions where I ski. Snow has no business on our roads and the President and Congress knows that."
Calls for impeachment over "SnowGate" as some are calling it already are mounting as deeply as the snow itself, and what will be discovered underneath will prove to have a truly chilling effect on the Republicans, as the inevitable thaw proceeds. Or something like that.
More breaking news......
Al Sharpton wants an investigation as to why snow is ALWAYS white.
Cheney has stock in Tru-Value Hardware. Do you have any idea how many SNOW SHOVELS they sold today to the unsuspecting consumer?
I demand to know why FEMA has been so late in reacting to this storm. THEY KNEW IT WAS COMING! And yet they failed to have crews in place to fix the electricity as soon as it went off. It just shows that Bush and the Republicans just don't care about the people in the N.E. The Senate needs to investigate this with administration people under oath. |

FOOD FOR THE SOUL |
Thursday, February 16, 2006 |
A friend of mine posted this comment in reply to the "Snipet Weigh-In" below. I thought that it needed its own post.
"I just came back from my friend's funeral. He was a friend of mine I had worked at the supermarket with that I had known for almost 4 years and he hadnt even turned 61 yet. He was in horrible shape and had been for the past year and a half or so. Last week he went brain dead, was in a coma a week ago today and died Friday. Ive felt fine the past few days, kicked my cold and was reaady to say goodbye. The second I sat down in the funeral parlor before the service and saw him lying in his casket, I was taken back to the last time I saw Butch alive. I looked around the place, it was a small gathering of mostly his family- wife, children, granchildren, etc. I approached his casket after the msgr finished the ceremony for one last tribute to the man. When I walked to the back of the room to look at some photos of him and his family I was too overcome. I found myself in tears not for myself, but for his family who he was so close to- he was a man I pretty much only knew at work- and when I saw his life outside of work through the family photos, I could only think of what his family has dealt with, esp his daughter who got up to read a poem and she had to sit back down immediately. The priest read the poem for her, and listening to it made it so much more difficult to say goodbye to Butch. After the ceremony I sat in my car for about 20 mins in the parking lot bc I felt like I would be a safety hazard driving on the roads. I sat there in silence just thinking about the past 4 years Ive known the man and how much I enjoyed working with him and all the comedy that was part of our workdays at the market. I want Butch to still be standing right now, next to his family. I wish no one had to be going through this. But the scriptures the priest read puts things in perspective, as always- Ive always loved the Bible for that. While I am kind of an emotional trainwreck still, I will get over it, we all will, and I am just so glad I knew the man and that I was part of his life and that he was a part of mine for the past few years. The story youve shared with us Jack is the first thing I read when I got back from the funeral and I am so thankful that you posted this. While we may be in one of our weaker moments right now in mourning the loss of our friend, I choose to be a coffee bean. I choose to be a coffee bean, not just for myself, but for all my friends who mourn Butch's passing, for all of his family who are far more affected than I ever will be by Butch's passing. I dont know still how to react to the death of a friend. Thats where the funeral comes in. I get a perspective from it- I think about any random moment I walked by the man, spoke with him, worked with him, what have you. I choose not to be a pessimist during these times because I still have my life to live, we all do, and if Butch saw my crying he would slap me for being such a pussy. But it sucks that he is gone. But again, I am so glad I knew the man as opposed to not knowing him at all. That is the beauty of life, and the beauty of being able to see a friend one last time. Yeah, I hate sitting here crying about Butch being gone, but would I ever erase any memory of him, or would I rather not known him at all, so I wouldnt have to be sad? No, that is selfish and if that were the case I might as well not ever befriend anyone and just walk alone every day. I choose to be a coffee bean. Ive said before that sometimes I randomly pick up my old tattered Bible from high school and just flip to random pages- this is one of those days. I am not a religious man, but I recognize that the tradition of worshipping the life and death of Jesus is what ultimately brings everyone together, at the beginning of someone's life, and at the end. People dont and might never recognize that, but from what the priest read from the Bible today, there are so many valuable lessons in that Book that its impossible to not recognize. This is the good of Christianity, the value and sanctity of life. As I like to say, putting the "fun" in funeral. When I say I am no religious man, it doesnt mean that I am not a spiritual man. I believe in the presence of that which may not be physically present. When Rene Descartes said, I think therefore I am, Ive always interpreted that as that which I think ABOUT also exists. So I know Butch is not gone, I know there is a tomorrow, I know we are all better people for having known the man. I know that it makes me recognize how great it is to have a huge family and a great community of friends like I have. It reinforces my belief that it is so much greater to be a coffee bean." Carrot, Egg, and Coffee
A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know ho! w she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.
Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that the! y were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and bre ak it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?"

CARTOON CARTOONS |
Wednesday, February 08, 2006 |
The good people of Denmark never knew what hit them, and they still don't know why. They keep mumbling to themselves, "Why us? We're tolerant, understanding, liberal, reasonable people. Why do they hate us? I thought they only hated pushy, arrogant, empirical power-mongers. We're none of those things."
"Yeah, but you ran a cartoon they didn't like."
"Well sure, but it was only a cartoon. I mean, we do believe in freedom of expression. But we're liberal, reasonable, tolerant, non-judgmental people."
"Yeah, but you ran a cartoon they didn't like."
"I know, but it was only a cartoon. We didn't try to restrict any of their freedoms or put them in jail, or take away any of their privileges or deny them anything we have. We're reasonable and liberal and tolerant and non-violent."
"Yeah, but you ran a cartoon they didn't like."
"Why do you keep repeating that? Haven't I already told you that it's just a cartoon? It doesn't hurt them or repress them or anything. It's just one man's opinion, expressed by a cartoon in a newspaper!"
"Yeah, but you ran a cartoon they didn't like."
"Will you stop saying that! I know that. How in the name of sanity does that justify burning our flags, setting our embassies on fire and threaten our lives?"
"Well, my good liberal Danish friend, it is no more complicated than this. These are people who address every grievance with violence and terror. It is what they have been taught to do. It is what they do, and you cannot reason with them. Watch this."
"We don't want apologies. We will not accept apologies. We want war. We want his hands cut off."
"Who was that? Was that one of Bin Laden's guys?"
"No, that was a Muslim cleric in your country, a leader of the 'regular folks' as Bill O'Reilly would call them."
"Who?"
"Never mind."
"So what are you telling me - that there's nothing we can do to stop this violence?"
"Don't look at me. You started it."
"What? We started it. How did we start it?"
"You ran a cartoon they didn't like." |

IF I WANT EDUCATION I'LL WATCH THE HISTORY CHANNEL |
Tuesday, February 07, 2006 |
Quick. Name a favorite movie or TV show with an important social message. That's right - there isn't one. If moviemakers are interested in getting people back into the theaters, I have but one suggestion - think entertainment. I know this sounds simplistic, but it just might work.
We are constantly bombarded from all directions with political and social messages in movies and TV programs that we watch for the entertainment. I know I'm not the only one who is weary of this. My friend, "Hole in One Bob" recently opined that he might quit watching one of his (and my) favorite TV shows, "Boston Legal," because he can't stand the political assault.
If TV programs and movies could both entertain and teach (or preach, or whatever), I wouldn't actually mind it, but rarely can producers and writers do both. Often, the shows with the most obvious "message" are also the least entertaining. NBC's colossal failure, "The Book of Daniel" is a prime example of a producer trying to push a social agenda with entertainment, and failing miserably.
What do you want in an entertainment program? I want interesting characters, witty dialogue and a good plot. If you first do that, then hit me with all the messages you want, but if you can't do that - then spare me the sermon.
I savor good entertainment for what it is supposed to be - an escape from the pressures of real world challenges and problems. When I find shelter from the storm, I don't want to watch the weather channel. Ralph Bristol |
