DOUBLE STANDARDS...
Thursday, January 20, 2005
Reuters news agency this week headlined a story, "Critics Say Bush Inaugural Too Lavish for Wartime," then quoted one "critic," Rep. Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat, who complained that the estimated $40 million for the Bush-Cheney inauguration is extravagant. The Associated Press moved a story that asked, "With that kind of money, what could you buy?" The answer, the wire service said: "200 armored Humvees ... vaccinations and preventive health care for 22 million children ... and a down payment on the nation's deficit." But a review of the cost for past inaugurations shows Mr. Bush's will cost less than President Clinton's second inauguration in 1997, which cost about $42 million. When the cost is adjusted for inflation, Mr. Clinton's second-term celebration exceeds Mr. Bush's by about 25 percent. According to the Consumer Price Index, $42 million in 1997 is the equivalent of $49.5 in 2004. Full story Hat tip: Stanley Trulove

This isn't a comment on this post, but on your blog in general:

"Not Left, Not Right--Just DEAD ON TARGET." Um, dude, if you leaned any farther to right, you'd fall over. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Also, on your assertion that Planned Parenthood encourages the use of abortions as birth control: I know a good deal about PP, and I browsed that site for teens you posted, but I don't find that to be the case. Can you be more specific about where they say abortion is a legitimate form of birth control?

Ha! Thanks for your comments, Kathy! SINCEREST thanks for visiting my 'blog--HOPE you return, and continue to challenge me!

I try to use a bit of logic and thought instead of ideology--sometimes truth may fall into a "right" or a "left" category, but that is often the perception of the reader, not always the author. Of course I can see why you would indicate that the 'blog is mostly right. Anything right of left is perceived as "right" by the left (and vv.)

    www.teenwire.com

This link immediately takes you to the first page on the teenwire website, and the first thing that hits your eye is the following statements:

"On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in the landmark case known as Roe v. Wade. With Roe, the Supreme Court recognized that our constitutional right to privacy includes a woman's right to choose whether or not to end her pregnancy. Today, abortion is legal in every state, although many states have laws that restrict women's access to abortion."

Thats the first page, mind you.

In there resources (of course) they plug themselves:

    "International Planned Parenthood Federation
    www.ippf.org

This international organization fights to secure reproductive rights and provides information, counseling, and reproductive health-care services to women around the world."

And everyone knows that "reproductive rights" is the code phrase for "abortion"--even the teens that visit the site.

Then if you search a little bit, you'll find the following missive: (However, the Snipet is not about doing everyone's homework for them, it's about encouraging and challenging others to do their own:) --Oh, and thats not all...

"On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in the landmark case known as Roe v. Wade. With Roe, the Supreme Court recognized that our constitutional right to privacy includes a woman's right to choose whether or not to end her pregnancy. Then and Now

Before Roe, abortion was illegal in all but 16 states, except when the woman's health was in danger, if she became pregnant because of rape or incest, or if the fetus had very serious health problems.

Before Roe, women often resorted to unsafe, illegal abortions to end unwanted pregnancies. According to one study, in 1965, 17 percent of all deaths due to pregnancy and childbirth were the result of illegal abortions. The right to choose — a right that is only 32 years old! — has literally saved thousands of lives since then.

The right to choose — a right that is only 32 years old! — has literally saved thousands of lives since then.

Today, women have the right to choose. They have the right to a safe, legal abortion. But some states restrict this right. Some ban funding for abortion services, making it difficult for poor women and teens to obtain abortions. Others require parental consent or parental notification before teens can have abortions.

And here's the scary part — after 32 years, the Supreme Court is only one vote away from overturning Roe v. Wade. That means if one pro-choice Supreme Court justice retires, and one anti-choice justice is appointed in that justice's place, abortion could be made illegal once again.

    Taking Action

So what can you do to protect a woman's right to choose? Here are some ideas from Vox®: Voices for Planned Parenthood:

Get visible. Organize a flash mob to draw attention to the pro-choice cause. A flash mob is a group of people who suddenly appear in a public place and do something unusual — like dress in the same colors, hold the same signs, and chant messages — and then disappear quickly. People gather in a flash mob at a pre-determined time and place, perform an action, and then go off in different directions just as suddenly as they've appeared.

Chalk the walks. (Check with your school first to see if they allow this!) The night before the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, chalk sidewalks in well-traveled areas outside of your school. Messages could be facts about Roe, statistics about unplanned pregnancies, or short, positive messages like "Stand Up for ChoiceSM!" Find possible message content about pregnancy and abortion on plannedparenthood.orgSM.

Rent a movie. But not just any old movie — one that speaks out about reproductive rights and sexual health. Gather some friends together and watch The Cider House Rules, If These Walls Could Talk, Saved, or Vera Drake. It's a good way to get informed and involved without going out in the cold!

Accessorize. Download a pro-choice flag, stencil, or IM buddy icon at SaveROE.com, or buy a pro-choice T-shirt from the Planned Parenthood store.

Volunteer. Volunteer to work at a local Planned Parenthood health center as a peer educator or health center escort. To find a Planned Parenthood health center near you, check out our list of affiliates.
Or join a Vox group at a college or university near you. Vox groups energize and mobilize pro-choice students who can educate others about the fight for reproductive freedom. To find out more about volunteering, check out the Planned Parenthood Network of Volunteer Advocates (PPNOVA).

Even if you're too young to vote, you're not too young to stand up for choice — and that's true all year long!

Liberals' memory only goes back as far as their latest grievance with GWB. Clinton could have blown all of 1999's tax revenues on porn and paper shredders. It wouldn't matter. The only thing that matters is that GWB is a big, dumb, evil liar with ties to Big Oil.

But your point is well taken. The Clinton's spent a WEEK celebrating the 92 inauguration. No complaints there.

BTW, how much did the Golden Globes cost to produce? Any Hollywood libs want to speak up?

You really want to get people started on *award shows*?!? Ok, here goes: Who on earth watches these things? Um, entertainment? "I'd like to thank my mom, and my hair dresser, and my plastic surgeon, and my 8th grade drama teacher."

As for the inauguration flap: I can understand people being more touchy about it during a war. But I wouldn't want to see *any* president spend that much; again, how many people are actually entertained/uplifted by this?

"Snipet" (pronounced: snipe - it) is not a word.It is a derivative of two words: "Snipe" and "Snippet".

Miriam Webster defines Snipe as: to aim a carping or snide attack, or: to shoot at exposed individuals (as of an enemy's forces) from a usually concealed point of vantage.

Miriam Webster defines Snippet as: : a small part, piece, or thing; especially : a brief quotable passage.

In short, "Snipets" are brief, snide shots at exposed situations from a concealed vantage point.
